AAAS/STEM Volunteer Program

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), through its affiliate organization, the Senior Scientists and Engineers (SSE) volunteer program, is looking for retired, and soon to be retired scientists and engineers to contribute to K-12 science education in our public schools. The AAAS/SSE places senior scientists, engineers and physicians into elementary, middle and high schools with the aim of improving the science education of all students. This is achieved by asking for a commitment from each volunteer to participate for an entire school year, dedicating a few hours of their time a week. In most cases, this typically works out to be a half a day or one day every week. We have almost 250 active volunteers in our program. I have been volunteering since 2007 and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been involved in. I am currently the team leader of the  volunteer program in Montgomery County, Maryland, where we have about 100 volunteers bringing the real world into the classroom.
